Ukrainian Eggs

These eggs are painted by hand, using a wax and dye process.  The design is painted on the egg with melted beeswax, using a tool called a kistka.  The egg is then dipped in dye, and more of the design is painted in wax.  This process is repeated until the design is completed.  At this time, the egg is covered with wax, and the design is no longer visible.  The egg is gently warmed over a candle flame to melt the wax, and the wax is carefully wiped off, revealing the finished design.  The egg is then coated with a finish to seal the colors.  It takes approximately 3 hours to complete the design on each egg, although some eggs with intricate designs can take hours longer.

The designs have symbolic meaning, and the eggs are traditionally painted with a specific recipient in mind.  For instance, rams and deer signify wealth and prosperity, and ladders signify the power of prayer.  Wheat brings wishes for a bountiful harvest, chickens signify fertility, and roosters represent virility.  With the advent of Christianity, eggs took on religious significance, as well.  Triangles represent the Trinity, red dots remind us of the blood Christ shed for us, netting signifies Christ's call to us to be fishers of men, stylized crosses represent Christ's victory over death, bands or lines around the egg symbolize the continuous thread of life or eternal life, and butterflies represent life after death (Christ Is Arisen)!
